heal.abstract | Physical oceanographic observations in the N.W. Aegean Sea have defined a surface mixed, isothermal layer above the main thermocline. The observations were made both before and after the passage of a severe storm through the area. The area is divided into three main oceanographic regions, based on water mass characteristics. The response and recovery of the surface layers to the storm, in each of the regions, is examined. In the more exposed areas of the N.W. Aegean Sea, there is a linear response between wind speed and the depth of the mixed layer; this is typical for both predictions and observations in open ocean areas elsewhere. In enclosed areas of the Sea, freshwater inputs and water circulation patterns further influence the development of the surface mixed layer and the wind effect is not as clear. | en |
