heal.abstract	Ο Κόλπος Θεσσαλονίκης καταλαμβάνει το πλέον βορειοδυτικό τμήμα του Αιγαίου. Είναι μια ρηχή κλειστή περιοχή, με βάθη μεταξύ 10 και 45 μέτρων. Συγκεντρώνει δε ιδιαίτερο ωκεανο- γραφικό ενδιαφέρον λόγω της άμεσης προτεραιότητας για βελτίωση των υπαρχόντων προβλη- μάτων ποιότητας των νερών. Η ωκεανογραφική διερεύνηση του Κόλπου Θεσσαλονίκης είναι τμήμα του «Προγράμματος παρακολούθησης της ποιότητας του θαλασσίου περιβάλλοντος του Κόλπου» (ΕΚΘΕ), που πραγματοποιήθηκε από το Δεκέμβριο 1999 μέχρι το Φεβρουάριο 2002. Οι μετρήσεις πεδίου περιλάμβαναν μηνιαίες μετρήσεις CTD. Οι μετρήσεις που πραγματοποιή- θηκαν καταδεικνύουν τη μεταβλητότητα της περιοχής των υφάλμυρων νερών ως αποτέλεσμα των διαφορετικών απορροών των ποταμών και των διαφορετικών μετεωρολογικών συνθηκών. Επίσης τονίζουν ορισμένα από τα ενδιαφέροντα χαρακτηριστικά του Κόλπου, όπως είναι η εισβολή των περισσότερο ψυχρών και αλμυρών νερών του Αιγαίου, που συμβαίνει για μικρές χρονικές περιόδους στη διάρκεια του χειμώνα και του καλοκαιριού. Η εποχιακή μεταβλητότητα των φυσικών χαρακτηριστικών του Κόλπου παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερη ένταση. Ο χειμώνας χαρα- κτηρίζεται από ομοιογένεια στη θερμοκρασία και την αλατότητα, ενώ οι αρχές της άνοιξης από έντονη αλατική στρωμάτωση λόγω της αυξημένης απορροής των ποταμών. Στη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού παρατηρείται έντονο θερμοκλινές και ταυτόχρονα αλατική ομογενοποίηση. Στα τέλη της άνοιξης και το φθινόπωρο παρατηρούνται ενδιάμεσες καταστάσεις ανάμεσα στις δύο «οριακές» καταστάσεις, του καλοκαιριού και του χειμώνα.	el
heal.abstract	The Thessaloniki Gulf is the far northwestern region of the Aegean Sea. It is a mainly shallow region with a depth of between 10 and 45 m and is surrounded on three sides by land. It is of particular oceanographic interest because of the urgent requirement to improve existing pollution problems. The oceanographic investigation into the Thessaloniki Gulf is part of the Project “Monitoring the quality of the Thessaloniki Gulf marine environment”, ΝCMR - and was conducted from December 1999 to February 2002. The field campaign includes the CTD survey every month. The data collected demonstrate the variability of the freshwater plume area extent and location, under different river run-off and meteorological conditions. Also, they highlight some interesting features of the Thessaloniki Bay region, such as the intrusion of cold and more saline water from the Aegean Sea into the bay, for short periods, during summer and autumn. The seasonal variability throughout the whole year is very intensive. Winter is characterised by thermal and haline homogenuity, while in early spring the haline stratification is very strong due to large outflows. In summer there is a strong thermocline combined with haline homogenuity. In late spring and autumn we have intermediate situations between the two ’extreme’ conditions observed in summer and winter.	en
