heal.abstract In March-92 and April-95 two CTD surveys, designed to examine the water formation and spreading processes in the East Mediterranean, covered the S.E. Aegean and N.W. Levantine regions west of ~30o E and north of ~34o N. In both surveys, newly formed water masses deeper than the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) were identified in addition to the typical LIW formation. During March-92 the entire north section of the Rhodes Gyre was well mixed down to at least 2000 m having the structure of a convective chimney. The well mixed core of the chimney had a diameter of about 150 km and was occupied by water with è~13.7oC, S~38.77 psu, óè~29.18. In April-95, isolated, well mixed, newly formed water blobs extending between 300 and 700 m were found during the early spreading phase in approximately the same area where the deep homogenization occured in 1992. These blobs had lateral scales of ~40-50 km and water characteristics (è~13.8oC, S~38.83 psu, óè~29.16) near to the deep water formed in 1992. In both surveys the newly formed LIW was found in the Ierapetra Ánticyclone south of the east tip of Crete. In March-92 a homogenized patch with lateral scale ~50-60 km covering the upper 300 m was found in the center of the Ierapetra Ánticyclone. Its water characteristics were: è~16oC, S~39.15 psu, óè~28.95. An isolated newly-formed LIW blob of ~30 km-diameter and è~15.2oC, S~39.1 psu, óè~29.08, was found in April-95 at the periphery of the Ierapetra Anticyclone in an area of cyclonic local circulation. It appears that the northern parts of the Rhodes Gyre characterized by lower water tempetatures provide a background that favors mostly the formation of water deeper than LIW, whereas the area south of the East Cretan Straits characterized by higher salinities, possibly enhanced by surface outflowing saline Cretan water, provide the appropriate background for LIW formation. A relationship exists between the width and the depth of the convective areas, i.e., the larger the lateral scale, the deeper the convection. In all of our observations, vertical convection seemed to be the dominant water formation mechanism. en
